Identity Crisis

I have a student named Sam who dresses and looks like a boy.

Her full name is Samantha, so I had the advantage of knowing her sex by looking at my roster.

Unfortunately, many of my students confuse her with a male. This has led to several unforunate and sometimes embarassing situations.

Several times I have heard screams from the girl's bathroom (which is right near my classroom) yelling for someone to get out. Sam will enter my classroom blushing and obviously upset, having just been yelled at for using the girl's bathroom.

In class there was a conversation that went something like this:

Me: See what Sam said there? She was exactly right!
Another student: Ms. McKenna, why do you keep calling him "she?"
Me: *completely ignoring student* Sam shared with us that too much carbon in the atmosphere makes it thick and traps the sun's rays.
Student: Wait, seriously, Ms. McKenna, you keep calling Sam "she."
Me: Still ignoring student because I'm awkward in awakward situations, "Samantha, why don't you explain how that increase in carbon causes global warming?"
Student: Samantha? I'm seriously confused.

Obviously ignoring the situation is not the best technique, but possibly effective.
